BINGHAMTON, NY ABORTUARY CLOSES
In May of 1997, Most Rev. James M. Moynihan, Bishop of Syracuse, NY led hundreds of Catholics in praying the Most Holy Rosary in front of a Binghamton, NY abortuary at 147 Front St. operated by Dr. Salomon Epstein. Later that year, a small group of Catholics, including members of Delaware County Right to Life, began praying the Rosary weekly at the same spot on Thursday afternoons for about an hour. They also brought with them signs, some depicting the Blessed Mother Mary, some showing aborted babies, others showing living babies. Other signs had easily readable messages such as "Face It Abortion Kills," and "Stop All Abortion." These signs were easily readable not only to patients going into or coming from the abortuary but also to traffic passing by on the street. The peaceful protestors also had literature to hand out on the sidewalk. They did not block access to the clinic.
In January 1998, a crisis pregnancy center, the All Women's Help Center, opened right across the street from the abortuary. In 2000, Salomon Epstein temporarily closed down the abortuary for a short time due to charges from the NYS Health Dept. (see below). The faithful prayer warriors continued their weekly presence in the heat of summer and the cold of winter. Finally, in the spring of 2002, the abortuary closed for good and the building was put up for sale. Praise God!
